Ahmad Moualla is celebrated for his striking canvases, intricate paper creations, and more recently, calligraphy. Moualla's evocative paintings delve into the often complex dynamics between society and the individual, capturing the influence of past and current icons. They also touch upon the increasingly blurred boundaries between truth and fiction, as well as the interplay between the conscious and subconscious realms.
Born in 1958 in Syria, Moualla is recognized as a prominent figure in Syrian post-modern expressionist art. He pioneered the integration of performance in his artwork and debuted at the Atassi Gallery in 1997 with the exhibition titled "A Tribute to Saadallah Wannaous," honoring the late Syrian playwright. Moualla's academic journey began at Damascus University of Fine Arts and later took him to the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Some of his standout solo exhibits include "Grey Ash" at Green Art Gallery in Dubai, UAE (2011), "Word: The Body of the Dialogue" in Athens, Greece (2010), and "New Works" again in Dubai (2009). Moualla's artistry also featured in various group exhibitions like "Nightfall" in Hungary (2012), "Written Images. Contemporary Calligraphy from the Middle East" in Hong Kong (2012), "New Horizons: Art from Syria" in Istanbul (2009), "Signs: Contemporary Arab Art" in New York (2009), and "Syrian Modern Art" in Doha, Qatar (2008).
