Born in Aleppo, Syria in 1971, Nasser Hussein graduated in 1997 from the Faculty of Fine Arts in Damascus. Following his first solo exhibition in the capital in 2001, he was awarded a scholarship from KAAD (Katholischer Akademischer Ausländer-Dienst) and moved to Germany to continue his studies. He studied at the University of Siegen under Prof. Daniel Hees, and later at the renowned Düsseldorf Academy of Art with Prof. Siegfried Anzinger.
The Lebanese poet Dr. Akl Awit once wrote that Nasser Hussein explores human existence through restraint, simplicity, and emotional depth. His paintings are sparse, using limited colors and visual cues to convey powerful emotional and existential themes. His figures are portrayed as neither neutral nor aggressive. Instead, they embody a mixture of fragility and strength. They appear solitary, quiet, and vulnerable. Leading Arab artists Youssef Abdelke and Dia al-Azzawi also wrote a text about Hussein's work, you can read both texts in full HERE.
Now living and working in Berlin, Nasser has participated in numerous international solo and group exhibitions including at the Asilah Forum, Asilah, Pier Boulez Hall, Berlin, Art-Lab, Berlin, Museum of Bad Berleburg, Germany, Atassi Gallery, Damascus, Gallery Tanit, Beirut, Karim Gallery, Jordan and Mashrabia Gallery, Cairo among others. He has also participated in the Cairo and Latakia Biennales. Notable collections where his work has been placed are the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Art, Atassi Foundation, and The Dubai Collection.
