Fann À Porter is delighted to announce the inclusion of Mayar Obeido's Decay during DIFC Art Nights 2024. This sculpture marks a time stamp of the metamorphosis of the natural change an object, that is inherently part of our everyday lives, where the concept of a rotting apple is sculpted with metal wires and hemp.

We live in a world full of objects and shapes that are sometimes ignored. We may get so caught up in what is happening around us that we forget to pay attention to the simplest shapes in our life. It could depend on the specific mental, emotional, and external circumstances that we are put in and don’t necessarily want to face.

The routines and the repetitions that we experience daily can make us lose track of time. For Mayar Obeido, these repetitions should force us to pay more attention to the mundane objects around us and start questioning their forms and meanings.

The apple. An object that is fundamentally a part of each person’s life and that the artist observes and records everyday. This surveillance of the object has allowed him to experience each part of the natural change it goes through. From ripe, sweet, and beautifully shiny, to metamorphosis of decay that it starts to experience. Changes in its shape, form, structure, and functionality under the effect of time and other experiential factors.

Decay (2022) is crafted from intertwined metal wires, embodies the essence of decay as a natural process as significant as growth. The metal, while strong and resilient, is subject to tarnish and rust, symbolizing the constant influence of time. The twisting and coiling of the wires create intricate patterns that echo the complexity of life as it changes and evolves. As the surface of the metal reacts to time and exposure, new textures and hues appear, uncovering hidden details that are only revealed through transformation.

These changes unveil the depth of shapes, showing that beneath the surface lies a more profound story. The wires, with their bends, overlaps, and layers, demonstrate that transformation does not merely alter an object but can also amplify its intricacies. The subtle cracks, corrosion, and irregularities become part of the visual language, emphasizing how change can enrich form and structure. This process encourages the viewer to see that within decay, the evolving shapes and patterns carry a newfound elegance that would otherwise remain unseen.

Decay delves into the idea that change and the passage of time can transform even the simplest structures into works of intricate beauty. The sculpture celebrates how the shifting nature of metal reveals hidden layers, enhancing our perception of depth and complexity. It stands as a testament to the silent power of time, illustrating that within corrosion and wear, there is a deeper story—a revelation of resilience, hidden intricacies, and unexpected splendor.
