Season of Migration to the North is based on the pseudonymous book by Sudanese author, Tayeb Salih. While the book specifically references Sudan and the turmoil and impact caused by the British Colonies, Ahmad Kasha has reiterated it in a more generalized way and respecified it to his own experiences of migrating from Syria, as well as the refugee crisis caused by the war.

The composition of this artwork is read from right, where darker scenes heave over the painting, to left, where light and brightness comes in. This intentional shift between lightness and darkness directly references how the artist views the past ten years of his life. What began during the war in Syria, witnessing the instability and chaos caused by external forces, was carried with the artist through his move to Dubai, where he found hopefulness and opportunity.

Though a study is normally prepared before creating the final work, Kasha created the study in conjunction with the colossal piece, which measures 150 x 1000 cm. This miniature version of the work allowed the artist to shift his perspective. While most of us are concerned with looking at the bigger picture, this study proves how, sometimes, focusing on the smaller details can allow us to view things through their process rather than focus on the end result.
